We’ve all unfortunately experienced the battle of the bulge–trying to eat fewer calories, exercise more, and eat healthfully while trying to avoid food’s biggest temptations (namely, chips and cookies).  It’s a tough fight, but you needn’t fight it alone: There are ways to make dieting easier without stressing yourself out.  Here’s what you need to know.

Though losing weight–fast–seems like an impossibility, it’s actually easy–if you know how to diet and exercise.  For the easiest way to slim down, follow these tips to a slimmer bod:

1. Exercise–in a different way.  Most diet programs want you to do the same, boring routine: Hours of cardio with little to no weightlifting.  Sure, in the short term cardio can increase your calorie burn, but it comes at a cost–it can have a catabolic effect on muscle tissue.  Muscle tissue isn’t just necessary for bodybuilders; having more of it means a higher metabolism, so cardio effectively could lower your metabolism.  That’s not good for weight loss.  The solution:Switch cardio for strength training instead, which builds muscle while making your heart healthier.  For a good, heart-pumping workout, consider compound strength training exercises, which force you to work out more than one major muscle group at a time.

2. Consider green tea.  Originally hailing from China, green tea first rose to popularity in the mid 90s, when scientists discovered it could make it easier to lose weight.  Later on, further research revealed it did much more than that–as well as boosting the metabolism, researchers say it could protect against cancer and lower your heart disease risk.  That’s a great reason to drink up, and luckily, green tea is low in calories too.

3. Spice up your diet.  Like spicy food?  Then you’re in for an easy way to boost your fat loss.  According to recent research, capsaicin, the chemical in food that gives it that “spicy” feeling, may help promote fullness, acting as a mild appetite suppressant.  That means you’ll have an easier time eating fewer calories without feeling deprived–with plenty of flavor!  Good ways to heat up: Adding a pinch of crushed red pepper to pasta, salad, or stir fry is an easy way to suppress your appetite; chopping up chile peppers for salads or wraps are also a great way to add capsaicin to your diet.

4. Have more caffeine.  Caffeine just isn’t a great way to get an energy boost–it also can suppress your appetite, according to the Mayo Clinic.  There’s also another bonus: It acts as a mild diuretic, which means it will promote more water loss, making you feel thinner, not puffier.  Good way to drink up: Consider coffee as a quick, filling way to get your dose of caffeine.  Soda is also a good option, but make sure to opt for diet, since regular soda is full of calories and sugar!

For additional ways to boost weight loss, don’t forget the importance of calories: Eating too much will cause you to gain weight, no matter how much green tea or caffeine you drink.
